Socialist Alliance doubles its vote
December 2, 2004
The Wills branch of the Socialist Alliance has hailed its Moreland Council election results as a huge step forward for a party just four years old.
"In north-east ward our candidates Tessa Theocharous and Brian Maher won a combined first preference vote of 11.09 per cent," said campaign manager David Glanz.
"This is double the best result we won in the last council elections. One in nine voters in Coburg and Fawkner backed socialist candidates committed to local and global campaigning.
"Our result in south ward was also excellent. Judy McVey and Terry Costello won a combined 8.98 per cent.
"Across both wards, 3809 voted Socialist Alliance and all four candidates saved their deposits."
Mr Glanz said feedback from voters showed support for a range of Socialist Alliance policies -- from greater safety at local swimming pools and an end to the outsourcing of council services, to support for refugees and for twinning Moreland with cities in Iraq and Palestine.
"Most of all we were complimented for putting forward a serious agenda when most other candidates were repeating motherhood statements about their local connections.
"Voters in Moreland are a sophisticated bunch who don't appreciate being soft-soaped," he said.
Mr Glanz pledged that Socialist Alliance would continue campaigning locally in 2005. "We don't just pop up at election time and then disappear," he said.
