Free Mordecai Vanunu!
November 24, 2004
The Socialist Alliance condemns the 11 November re-arrest of anti-nuclear whistle blower Mordecai Vanunu in Jerusalem by Israeli police. We call for his immediate release, as well as the removal of restrictions on his right to travel internationally and to speak publicly about Israel’s nuclear capabilities.
As a former employee of the Israeli nuclear industry, Vanunu’s “crime” was to provide British newspaper The Sunday Times with detailed information that demonstrated that Israel had extensive nuclear capabilities - capabilities that it had gone to great lengths to deny. After making these revelations, Vanunu was kidnapped in Rome by Mossad agents (the Israeli secret service) and spirited back to Israel where he was imprisoned for almost 18 years. He was released in April this year. Since his release he has continued to campaign against Israel’s nuclear war industry. He has also been seeking to escape Israeli oppression by living in countries such as Sweden, but he has been refused asylum.
The Socialist Alliance calls on all progressive people in Australia to protest Vanunu’s re-incarceration. We join the call for his release, and call on the Australian government to provide him with asylum here, should he request it.
