"Trust Howard government to lie": Socialist candidates
August 30, 2004
"Trust is indeed a key issue in the coming election. The Australian people can have absolute trust that the Howard government will lie about its record and its real intentions. But the ALP under Mark Latham can also be 'trusted' not to rock the boat of the corporate system," Coral Wynter, Socialist Alliance candidate for the seat of Brisbane in the October 9 elections, said today.
"The lies about refugee children overboard, imaginary Iraqi weapons of mass destruction, the GST, Medicare and education funding are only the tip of the iceberg. Socialist Alliance stands for an end to the Howard government of lies, but also calls for pressure to be kept on a Latham Labor government to implement policies in the interests of the people."
"Another Australia is possible. An Australia with jobs, free health care and education for all. An Australia where people and the environment come before corporate profits. We stand for the immediate withdrawal of all Australian troops from Iraq; cuts in spending on the military; an end to detention of refugees and closure of all detention centres; and land rights and compensation for Aboriginal and Islander peoples."
The Socialist Alliance is standing a Queensland Senate team of prominent Aboriginal community leader Sam Watson and Aboriginal rights activist Nicole Clevens – the only all-indigenous Senate team in the state.
SA is also standing three House of Representative candidates in Brisbane: long-time campaigner for the environment, women’s rights and international solidarity Coral Wynter, for the seat of Brisbane; union and solidarity activist Lynda Hansen, for the seat of Griffith; and student rights campaigner Michael Myles, for the seat of Oxley.
