Stop Israel’s war of terror

"The assassination this week of HAMAS spiritual leader Sheik Ahmed Yassin is an outright act of terrorism by the Israeli government", the Socialist Alliance candidate for Blaxland, Raul Bassi, said today.

The Socialist Alliance joins with all those anti-war campaigners, solidarity and human rights organisations, and Muslim Australians who have condemned the murder of the wheelchair-bound religious leader.

"The murder of Yassin is the latest in a long list of crimes committed by the Israeli state in its decades-long campaign of terror against the Palestinian people for daring to demand their right to self-determination and an independent Palestinian state", said David Glanz, Socialist Alliance candidate for Wills. "Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, who personally ordered the assassination, should be charged with murder", he added.

"The Australian and United States governments’ refusal to condemn the Israeli security forces attack is utter hypocrisy following their strong statements just a week ago condemning the terrorist attacks in Spain", Bassi said.

He added, "While suicide bombings will never free the Palestinian people, a ‘war on terror’ which condones Israeli state-sponsored terrorism can only bring more oppression for Palestinians."

"Australia’s Foreign Minister Alexander Downer has once again made it clear that the Australian government’s support for the ‘war on terror’ has nothing to do with justice or security for the world’s peoples, and everything to do with its military and political alliance with the United States and its warmongering friends", Glanz said.

"The first step in a solution to the Palestine-Israel conflict is for Israel to immediately withdraw from the Occupied Territories. We call on the Australian government to take a real stand against terrorism by ending its support for the Israeli occupation of Palestine."

Socialist Alliance will continue to campaign in solidarity with the Palestinian people’s demand for an independent state and the right of return of Palestinian refugees.
