The national conveners will be taking some further steps in September to push the campaign along. This includes producing a new leaflet – “Give us your change for socialist change” – explaining the enormous importance of individuals’ financial contributions, no matter how small, to building left unity and a socialist alternative. The leaflet is for use on all SA stalls, at our events, in mail-outs and in discussions with supporters and members about the urgent need for a strong socialist organisation that can build movements capable of turn backing the current attacks on working people.
As well, we will be rearranging the Alliance web site to put the appeal for donations right up front, and making it easier for members and supporters to make payments direct from the web by subscribing to PayPal, an international system which ensures that individuals’ credit card details are totally confidential and secure This system will be up on the web by the beginning of October.
In the end, however, the success of the national finances campaign – upon which so much of our political work depends – will be determined at the grassroots level, by the efforts of the branches in ensuring that all members know about the campaign and are encouraged to participate.
We all want a world that does not revolve around money. The very nature of this goal means that we do not have big business backers and we don’t get any of Costello’s “tax breaks”. We rely instead on the commitment and solidarity of ordinary working people. Our strength is in our collectivity – the pooling of many people’s small resources into a common pot that makes us strong.
